FIRE EMERGENCIES

BARBECUING SAFETY

Well we are already talking about barbecuing, in our neck of the woods. So let's talk a little about some safety precautions to make sure, everything goes well with the good times and great meats we want to enjoy!

BEFORE BARBECUING

  • Check your grill thoroughly for leaks, cracking or brittleness before using it.
  • Clean out the tubes that lead into the burner.
  • Make sure the grill is at least 10 feet away from your house, garage, or trees.
  • Store and use your grill on a large flat surface that cannot burn (i.e.- concrete or asphalt).
  • Don't use grills in a garage, porch, deck or on top of anything that can catch on fire.
  • Keep children away from fires and grills. It is a good idea to establish a safety zone around the grill and instruct children to remain outside the zone. A chalk line works great for this purpose.
  • Have a fire extinguisher, a garden hose attached to a water supply, or at least 16-quarts of water close by in case of a fire.

DURING BARBECUING

  • Don't wear loose clothing that might catch fire.
  • Use long handled barbecue tools and/or flame resistant mitts.
  • Never use any flammable liquid other than a barbecue starter fluid to start or freshen a fire.
  • Never pour or squirt starter fluid onto an open flame. The flame can easily flashback along the fluid's path to the container in your hands.
  • Keep alcoholic beverages away from the grill, they are flammable!
  • Never leave the grill unattended

AFTER BARBECUING

  • Always follow the manufacturer's cleaning and storing instructions that accompany the grill.
  • Keep your grill clean and free of grease buildup that may lead to a fire.
  • Never store liquid or pressurized fuels inside your home and/or near any possible sources of flame.

IN CASE OF A BARBECUE FIRE

  1. For PROPANE Grills - turn off the burners. For CHARCOAL Grills - close the grill lid. Disconnect the power to ELECTRIC Grills.
  2. For PROPANE Grills - if you can safely reach the tank valve, shut it off.
  3. If the fire involves the tank, leave it alone, evacuate the area and call the fire department (911). If there is any type of fire that either threatens your personal safety or endangers property, ALWAYS DIAL 911.
  4. NEVER attempt to extinguish a grease fire with water. It will only cause the flames to flare up. Use an approved portable fire extinguisher.

POST HOUSE NUMBERS!

Post house numbers:

• Directly on your house, apartment, or garage. • By the street or on a post or sign made of fire resistant material. • On the mailbox or curb. • Anywhere they can be easily seen from the road. • That they are easy to read, not CURSIVE style. • They are at least 4" high. • Keep your house numbers clearly visible throughout the year. • If your home or business is set back from the street or road, post your address numbers at the entrance of your driveway. • In situations where more than one home is accessed off a single driveway, all addresses should be posted on each appropriate intersection along the driveway. • Be sure your numbers can be seen at night.

CAN WE FIND YOU IN AN EMERGENCY?

Clearly posted house numbers can save precious time should an emergency occur. Response time is crucial; seconds lost can mean the difference between life and death.

Things you can do:

• Purchase and install Solar Powered House Numbers for your home. • Encourage your friends, family & neighbors to post their house numbers, VISIBLE too! • Have a family home fire escape plan and practice often. • Have a working smoke detector on every level of your home, especially by the bedrooms. • Report all fires, immediately! U.S. fire departments respond to over 2,000,000 fires each year. • Contact your local fire department for additional information for help in protecting your home.

It is difficult for emergency vehicles to find homes

Firefighters, emergency vehicles, and personnel may need to find your home quickly should an emergency occur. It is difficult for emergency vehicles to find homes and businesses whose address numbers are not properly posted and illuminated at night.

Here is what a registered nurse has to say:

"I am an on call nurse for a local hospice and I really wish I could see better the house numbers when I get call in the middle of the night. It takes me longer to find my patients' houses because they are in dark streets. Sometimes they are in pain or respiratory distress and I know they need my attention immediately." Regina Gurgel RN

When every second counts... Can they find you?

When every second counts... Can they find you?

Emergency rescue personnel are trained to respond quickly to save lives. Unfortunately, most house numbers are virtually impossible to see at night. Your life and family life is in danger.

Fire Departments and Police Departments are in agreement...visible house numbers save lives!

Your house numbers should be clearly visible from the street, and well lit at night. They should not be blocked by any trees or bushes.

Numbers should be well-lit at night. This can be accomplished by having a solar powered house number!

Don't let them go by, when you need the most!
